Istaria
Istaria searched the horizon above her. Although she suspected Lusiradrol would not attack directly from such a vantage, the rockslide made her wary of her surroundings.
Rowen grazed quietly on the tufts of grass scattered among the rocks.
With a sigh, she dipped the waterskin into the cold mountain spring. Air bubbled out of the mouth until it was full. When it finished, she tied it closed and strained to lift it from the water. For Darius, the task would be easy. Not so for her.
She glanced back to his still form lying near the embers of her fire.
After two days, Darius had not awakened. She worried that he never would.
In that time, she had recovered her full strength and felt ready to defend herself. However, the food would soon run out, and she knew not how to find more in this desolate location. Whether directly or not, Lusiradrol might have her wish.
As she gazed into the small pool, Istaria barely recognized the girl staring back. Her soft white hair fell across her shoulders, dull and dirty and tangled. This journey had stolen the dignity that had been hers. How she wished for a bath, finished by fragrant perfumes and the stroke of a brush through her hair!
Damn this existence! The girl in the pool pouted, her eyes swelling with tears. At least in Hadeon, she had retained her pride. She didn't even have that anymore.
Tears burned in her eyes. She sniffed her frustration, trying to hold back the sobbing that choked her. With a glance back, she hoped for the countless time that Darius had awakened. He lay still.
Frustrated and miserable, she let loose her control on the tears. Istaria splashed away her reflection and fell aside onto a cool tuft of grass. Hope drained from her like a bucket with no bottom. The little that she had clung to washed away with her tears.
At the edge of her mind the magic lapped in gentle waves. Only when it probed her with a purpose did she notice the presence of another. She tensed, fearing Lusiradrol had returned.
However, the disturbance rang familiar and welcome.
Istaria turned her blurry eyes to the sky and the bird circling high above. The scream of a hawk pierced the air. She smiled and remembered the shape-changing woman she had met so long ago. At least she hoped it was. How could anyone else have found them?
As the hawk landed, it transformed into the slender woman she had met early in their journey. Gaispar bowed her head. "They sent me to your aid, my lady."
Istaria wiped her eyes, but succumbed to overwhelming relief.
Gaispar turned to where Darius lay on the ground. "It then is true, the words of Sethirngal."
Istaria followed Gaisparâs eyes, puzzled by the woman's words. Lusiradrol did this.
Saying nothing, Gaispar started toward Darius. Istaria dragged the heavy waterskin a few steps behind.
Gaispar knelt next to Darius, her eyes studying him, and passed her hands slowly over his body. Istaria watched from his other side with the hopes that the woman could heal him.
